Behind the Mask
I grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, where a bright smile was treated like a sign of good manners and good health. But behind those smiles, I watched relatives struggle with toothaches, extractions, and expensive dental visits that could have been avoided with earlier care. Those experiences stayed with me.
When I moved to Jacksonville, Florida, to complete my dental training, I noticed the exact same pattern. Smart, caring people simply hadn't been given clear, trustworthy information early enough. Most questions I received weren't about complicated procedures—they were about everyday habits.
People wanted to know which toothbrush actually mattered, whether they were flossing "right," or how their stress, sleep, and diet affected their gums. I loved those conversations because they connected clinical dentistry with real life: busy parents, shift workers, and retirees juggling multiple health concerns.
I realized I was having the same reassuring talk over and over in the exam room: breaking down X-ray findings in plain language, drawing quick sketches on a sticky note, and turning scary diagnoses into step-by-step game plans. That's what pushed me to start Island Dental.
The "Island" in Island Dental is a nod to my Caribbean roots and the idea that good dental care can be a calm, grounded place in the middle of a hectic life. My goal is to bring you evidence-based, no-nonsense guidance on building habits that protect your smile and overall health.
